Go plastic free in the bathroom

Bathrooms can tend to be a haven for plastic – whether through plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles, hair products, toothbrushes or body wash containers.

There are many alternative options now available to help reduce the plastic waste created in the bathroom.

Some pretty easy swaps are switching to a bamboo toothbrush and using a shampoo bar. These changes alone will make a big difference, but there is even more you can do. Read more

How to create a nude food lunch box

Packing children’s lunch boxes for school (or the big kids lunch boxes for work) is one of those daily things that has to be done, and there are so many convenient snacks at the supermarket to make it quick and easy. But, with convenience also comes a lot of waste.

Individually wrapped chip or biscuit packets, yoghurt tubs or pouches, cheese and crackers, muesli bars, the list goes on. Each of these packaged items creates more waste every day, and they aren’t the healthiest of options either.

So there are multiple reasons to look at reducing the packaging that goes into your child’s lunch box. Read more

eco-friendly plastic free zero waste

Ten tips to reduce waste in daily life

Taking the first steps to help reduce how much we throw away can be overwhelming – where do you start?! We tend to have so much ‘stuff’ in our homes, we throw away more and more, there is plastic packaging everywhere you look, but it can turn around with a few changes in habits.

My advice is to focus on one thing at a time Read more

The plastic bottle problem and how we can help

A few years ago I was lucky enough to travel around Mexico. One day we took a boat ride through a national park. The scenery was amazing – cruising through a gorge and looking up to see waterfalls and monkeys jumping through the trees, it was a really beautiful place. Then we came across a crocodile (thankfully a reasonable distance away!) resting on the shore – it was surrounded by rubbish, mainly plastic bottles. They were floating in the water and accumulating on the banks of the river, it was awful to see. Such a pristine place, tainted by our pollution. Read more

Recycling rules and how to recycle right

Recycling is a great way to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and also reduce the use of resources like energy and water that go into making new products. There are so many items that can be recycled and with access to local council kerbside recycling services, it is made super easy.

It can be confusing what can actually be recycled, what can go in your kerbside recycling bin and what can’t, and where to take those trickier to recycle items. It’s important to make sure we get it right because putting the wrong thing in the recycling bin can cause issues at the processing plant. Or things that can be recycled inadvertently end up as landfill. To make sure your recycling efforts are as effective as possible, read on for some tips about getting recycling right. Read more

Tips for an eco-friendly Christmas

It’s that time of year again – the Christmas festivities are in full swing, the Christmas tree is up at our house and I’ve even started shopping for presents, because the 25th of December will be here in no time!

It’s a time where we eat and drink to excess, we catch up with friends and family, and we reflect on the year gone by. But we also create so much waste at this time of year! All the beautifully wrapped presents under the tree, the Christmas cards given out and posted, the packaging from all the gifts we purchase, so much of it ends in the bin. Hopefully the recycling bin, but it all only has a short lifespan before it is no longer needed and thrown away.

I love seeing the excitement as the kids unwrap their gifts, but I cringe when I see the big bag of torn up wrapping paper after the fun is over. There must be a better way! Read more

Coffee pods – convenience vs the guilt of extra waste

Coffee pods – they have made it so quick and easy to make a delicious coffee at home or work and the convenience is brilliant! It’s no wonder they are so popular. But, they have created an extra source of waste that comes at a cost.

Choice reports that Australians are using more than three million coffee pods per day!! Aluminium pods can be recycled but it is estimated that millions of kilograms of aluminium has ended up in landfill[1]. That is a huge waste let alone the amount of natural resources needed to make the pods in the first place.

While aluminium pods can be recycled, in the scheme of things it is better to ‘reduce’ the need for an item, or ‘reuse’ items, and then if the first two options can’t be achieved – the third option is to ‘recycle’. Read more
