A quick guide to a sustainable festival season

Being based in Adelaide, February and March is a great time of year because it’s festival season!

The Fringe is first, followed by the Adelaide Festival, it’s a great chance to get out and about and check out some shows.

Like any big festival, there can be a direct impact on the environment so it’s great to see festival organisers making a commitment to environmental sustainability.

For example, Fringe venues will be using biodegradable and compostable cutlery and food containers, costumes and sets are reused from previous years or made from recycled or sustainable materials and a move to e-ticketing will reduce the amount of tickets printed on paper.

What can you do to reduce your impact on the environment during the Fringe or any other festival?

🍃 You can take your own water bottle or a reusable coffee cup and avoid disposable beverage containers

🍃 If you will be enjoying a snack or meal from a food truck, you can take your own reusable cutlery to avoid the need for disposable cutlery

🍃 The same goes for purchasing drinks – you can take your own reusable straws so you don’t need a disposable straw

🍃 In case of a spot of shopping, keep a reusable bag on you. Many pack down really small so stash one in your handbag so you don’t need to use plastic bags

🍃 If you do have paper or beverage containers to dispose of, keep an eye out for the right bin so that if it’s a recyclable item it ends up in the right place

🍃 Consider catching public transport, riding your bike or sharing a ride to get to your show.

Each of these will make a difference and help towards a sustainable festival season!
